How to Optimise Your Australian Superannuation Concessional Contributions
Australia’s Superannuation system is widely regarded as one of the world’s most tax-advantaged retirement vehicles.
With the mandatory Super Guarantee (SG) contribution rate set at 11.5% and scheduled to rise to 12%, voluntary concessional contributions present an exceptional avenue for reducing taxable income.
🇦🇺 Concessional vs Non-Concessional Contributions
- Concessional Contributions (Pre-tax): Taxed at just 15% within the super fund (substantially lower than marginal tax rates of 30%, 37%, or 45% + Medicare levy). Capped at $30,000 per financial year.
- Non-Concessional Contributions (After-tax): Made with take-home pay on which tax has already been assessed. No tax applied on entry to the super fund.
💡 The Carry-Forward Concessional Rule
If your total super balance was under $500,000 on 30 June of the previous financial year, the ATO permits you to access unused concessional contribution caps on a rolling 5-year basis.
For instance, if you had $10,000 in unused cap space each year for the past three years, you can make a single lump-sum deductible contribution of up to $60,000 in one financial year—wiping out a substantial tax liability during high-income periods or asset sales.
